Voidomatis River - Vikos Canyon - Meteora Monasteries
The Vikos-Aóos Nationalpark is unique in its beauty and untouched wilderness. The Vikos canyon with the Voidomatis river is 10km long and between 600 to 1000m steep. As per Guinness book it is the deepest canyon in the world.
The view from the village Vikos is absolutly fantastic
Driving along the Zagori villages leads us to the 6m high monument for the brave women of Zagori, who were activ in supplying the greek soldiers in WW II against the Italian invasion.
We arrive late in the afternoon and are able to visit only one monastery, the Varlaám Monastery. Very impressive. Since it is late most of the other tourists are already gone.
The interior paintings in the church are wonderful. Unfortunately taking photos inside the church is not allowed
Cleaning up after the tourist invasion
Painting in the chapel beside the nursery
The monk is flying home after work
Upon the recommendation of Conny&Chris, the couple we met the day before we find a great campsite nearby the Monasteries with a view over the valley.
Nowadays the mobile phone is also a fixed component of a shepeard
View from our campsite in the afternoon.....
